1.) To study the causes of genocide and the effects it has on the perpetrator, cultures, bystanders, and international relations.   
2.) To identify and use structural features of a public document to locate and examine the definition of genocide as defined by the
Genocide Convention
3.) To explore the possibilities for misinterpretation of the definition by clarifying the main ideas and connecting it with other sources.

GENOCIDE

Genocide
as defined by the United Nations in 1948 means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national ethnic, racial, or religious group, including:

• Killing members of the group
• Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group
• Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part
• Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group
• Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group

Other Definitions of Genocide

The systematic and planned extermination of an entire national, racial, political, or ethnic group.
The deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political or cultural group.
