Research and Presentation

Cultural Victims (Informative):  Students will read and analyze articles relating to specific cultures targeted by the Nazis during the Holocaust.  Students will also conduct extensive research about each civilization. They will then deliver necessary information, as well as interesting and key facts about each culture.

(See attachment)
Modern Genocide (Informative/Persuasive):  Students find information on the World Wide Web and develop a learning aid that displays the results of your research for the rest of the class. Be careful and complete when you are gathering the information, but use your creativity and style to produce the project. You will be graded on both accuracy of the facts and the presentation.

Objective:  The objective of this activity is to research and develop a presentation that displays three real-world situations regarding the abuse of human rights by current governments.  Each of these real-world situations must connect to genocide and/or crimes against humanity.  The researched information should be thorough and factual, and be explicitly paralleled to similar situations in society.

The Process: Exploring the Web, Creating a Product
  • There are current situations (see list below) in the world where leaders are using the weaknesses of their people to gain and abuse power. Use the information that you find on the Web to gather information for your poster. Be aware of the following items as you search:
    • The people (who)
    • The situation (what)
    • The place (where)
    • How long the situation has occurred (when)
    • Reasons for the situation (why)
  • Step #1: Gather information about human rights situations around the world (Kenya, El Salvador, Egypt/Libya, Turkey, etc).
  • Step #2:  Record the information about the political and social situations you find on the web. Find the important information (who, what, where, when and why) and record it on your paper.
  • Step #3: Parallel these situations to other events you are aware of. Choose a theme you think applies to the real world situations you discovered.
  • Step #4: Organize the information into a display piece. Be sure to include everyone in the group. Listen and allow everyone to make suggestions. Be creative and include maps, or a unique layout (something original). The key is to make it fun to look at, in addition to being educational and informative.
  • Step #5:  Assemble the parts into a finished version. Be sure to have all members read the text to check for mistakes and readability. All writing must be typed
  • Step #6:  Finally, turn it in on time.

How You Will Be Graded

The finished product will be evaluated using the following rubric:

I. The information should identify three real world events (brief and factual) and parallel each event to similar situations.  It should also advance a judgment that shows a comprehensive grasp of theme, supports key ideas, and demonstrates awareness of theme.
